Okay, let’s talk vampire films…

Universal Pictures

Vampires have been around for ages, and it’s high time we cut through the crap and talk about some seriously spectacular undead feature films. Here are 12 vampire films that really drained their audiences and left them wanting more.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

New Zealand Film Commission

This mockumentary is about a group of four vampires sharing a flat in New Zealand. Sure, it’s hilarious, but there are enough dark moments and vampiric easter eggs to please any Nosferatu fan. If you’re a fan of both The Office and the undead, you’ll fall over over heads in love with this movie. Plus, there’s now an FX series of the same name, so you can get your fill of non-stop laughs at the expense of these slow-witted bloodsuckers time and time again. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, or Vudu, and YouTube. You can also watch the series on Fox and Hulu.

Daybreakers (2009)

Lionsgate

This might not be the best movie on this list, but the concept behind Michael and Peter Spierig’s Daybreakers is genius. My favorite part is the vampires mixing blood into their morning (or, I guess… night?) coffee. Because, honestly, same. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, or Vudu, and YouTube.

I Am Legend (2007)

Warner Bros.

Although this movie strays pretty far from the Richard Matheson story it’s based on, Will Smith’s portrayal of Robert Neville is so good that it honestly doesn’t matter. It’s far from your grandparent’s usual vampire story, but you’ll be scared of the dark nonetheless. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

The Lost Boys (1987)

Warner Bros.

This classic vampire film made vampires sexier than ever. Kiefer Sutherland and his vamp makeup inspired an entire generation of horny Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, and Jami Gertz is hot AF. It’s basically a bisexual’s dream. So, I guess what I’m saying is, it’s the perfect vampire film. Watch on Amazon, HBO Now (free for subscribers), iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)

Logan Pictures/SpectreVision

This black-and-white film feels like a Persian Let the Right One In. It’s like watching Lugosi’s Dracula with a modern, darker twist. Get ready to be terrified of vampires all over again in a whole new light — or, rather, a whole new dark. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

Underworld (2003)

Lakeshore Entertainment

Okay, so basically, nothing is ever going to top Kate Beckinsale as a leather-clad, gunslinging vampire. Len Wiseman’s take on vampires, werewolves, and everything in between is truly entertaining. Peep those teeth, amirite? Could there be a more iconic horror-action movie hybrid? Also, this a six-part saga, so you’ll be entertained by Underworld for practically an ~eternity~. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

American Zoetrope/Osiris Films

Featuring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, and Gary Oldman, this movie is the most iconic rendition of Bram Stoker’s classic vampire tale IMO. It’s the perfect mixture of campy and terrifying. If you’re a millennial who was terrified of Dracula but eventually got turned on by Twilight, you probably saw this sexy rendition of Dracula in action as a kid. Sorry — I don’t make the rules. Watch on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, and YouTube.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

Recorded Picture Company

Honestly, this dark-comedy is hot AF. Also, it’s critically acclaimed. Although I’m not a huge Tom-Hiddleston fan, Tilda Swinton and Mia Wasikowska are fucking iconic as eternal, vampiric beings. This is the story of Adam and Eve we’ve all been waiting for. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

4.

The Transfiguration (2016)

Transfiguration Productions

This unique take on the vampire genre is revolutionary in more ways than one. Mixing themes of social equality and horror, The Transfiguration keeps you guessing from start to finish. This is far more horrific than your average vampire film, but the reason why isn’t quite what you’d expect. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

3.

30 Days of Night (2007)

Columbia Pictures

Based on a comic-book series, this vampire film is truly terrifying. Barrow, Alaska, is a real town (although it’s now known as Utqiagvik), and it legitimately experiences 30 days of night in a phenomenon known as polar night. So, maybe the vampires might not be real, but they could be… It’s the perfect setting, right? Guess you’ll have to visit to find out for sure. Watch on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.

2.

Let the Right One In (2008)

EFTI

This movie is pure art, and I highly recommend you read the book by Swedish author, John Ajvide Lindqvist. Both the movie and book are truly haunting (but maybe the book more so). This Swedish tale is one that will stick with you. Maybe forever… Watch on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, and YouTube.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Warner Bros.

This might be the most iconic vampire film ever made. Based on the book by Anne Rice, this film features Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and a young Kirsten Dunst as bloodsuckers. It really dives deep into what it means to be human (and what it would mean to be immortal). It’s homoerotic AF and will no doubt satisfy the wants of vampire lovers everywhere. Watch on Amazon, Cinemax (free with subscription), iTunes, Vudu, and YouTube.
